This Simple Yet Strong Joint Is Perfect For A Mitered Frame
If you need to make a mitered frame that needs to stand up to some abuse, like twisting and wracking you need to consider using this mitered half lap joint.
A standard mitered jointed frame is great when it is supported by another structure, but on it's own the mitered corners are pretty weak because they are essentially a end grain to end grain glue joint. The pins or nails in the join don't hold that well.
When you add the half lap to the joint you get some good surfaces to glue and fasten together.
This video shows you how to make this joint.
