To Back Your Sandpaper With A Block Is Critical For A Good Sanding Job
Over 30 years ago an old wise carpenter showed me how to make sanding blocks out of scrap 3/4″ plywood. And I've been using these blocks ever since.
Just cut you scrap plywood 4″ x 8 1/2″ and then cut a 1″ deep groove down one of the long edges. Tuck the sandpaper in the groove, wrap it around the block and tuck the other edge of the sandpaper in the groove and you are ready to go.
You have a wide 4″ face for sanding flat surfaces and a narrow 3/4″ face for tight spots.
You can also make 1/2 sized blocks, but I seldom use that size. The theory is the longer the length of sandpaper you can put into contact with the wood you are sanding the faster you are going to get the job done.
