Poor Man’s Bench 12 – Doweling The Joints

Doweling the joints

Doweled Tenons are the traditional way to hold mortise and tenon joints together.

You see these dowel in the large timber frame structures to the joints in fine cabinets and chests.

One of the secrets to get the joint to draw together real tight was to drill the hole in the tenon just slightly closer to the shoulder. That way when the peg or dowel was driven in it force the joint to draw tight. Thus the name given it – the draw tenon joint.
