The Trick Outside Is To Come Up With Some Way To Mark Your Layout Lines.
Pins and string can work great for this. It's also wise to tie some survey tape around the pins so you don't loss them.
The pins you use will depend on the soil condition. The looser or more muddy the soil the longer the pin you will require.
I usually use common nail between 6″ and 12″ as my pins, but sometimes in extreme conditions longer pieces of 1/2″ rebar are required.
It also helps to drive a length of rebar beside the pin with flagging tape tied to it, to mark it's location and prevent trucks and equipment from driving over it.
Here's how to do the 3 4 5 layout method.
It helps to have two tape measures to find the intersection point, especially when you are using larger multiples of 3 4 5 to get more accuracy.
